Art in Textiles - Barbara Shaw - Textile Artist
I ‘paint’ with textiles, creating collage pictures by hand-stitching or bonding small pieces of fabric together in layers to create the effect I want. I use patterned and tactile materials in vibrant or subtle colours: chiffon ribbons for shading, sparkly fabric for light and tweed for texture all help to bring my artwork alive. As I am a self-taught textile artist, I am constantly experimenting to stretch the range of subjects which I tackle. I am inspired by natural forms as well as my surroundings and hope to engage
the viewer in looking afresh at familiar images.
I am a Licentiate Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and also a member of Oxfordshire Craft Guild. I exhibit regularly with the Guild at venues throughout Oxfordshire. This year I will be Artist in Residence at Chastleton House, a 17th Century National Trust property near Morton-in-Marsh. I also exhibit locally in Bucks and at art galleries and fairs in the South of England.
As well as originals, my work is for sale as limited edition prints and cards. The scale varies according
to the subject and the material available and ranges from tiny abstract pieces to large framed pictures
of textile art. I am happy to discuss commissions, please contact me for details.
